Research roots. Practical tools.

From the makers of RhizoVision Explorer.

Our work in root phenotyping brings together research imaging, open software, and the tools that make a repeatable workflow possible. Phenotyper builds on that experience to equip your laboratory.

RhizoVision Explorer is free, open-source software for measuring root traits from scanner and camera images. Explore the software, published methods, and root-scanning protocols at RhizoVision.com ↗.

Why scan roots?

Turn a root sample
into measurements.

Flatbed scanning records washed-root structure for analysis of traits such as length and diameter. The quality of that starting image matters: clear contrast, even lighting, and minimal root overlap make roots easier to distinguish and measure.

01

Prepare a clear image

Spread washed roots in water and reduce overlaps before scanning.

02

Measure root traits

Use suitable analysis software to estimate length, diameter, volume, and branching traits.

03

Keep the workflow consistent

Document preparation and scanner settings so samples can be compared using the same method.

Methods and open resources

From roots to measurements.

Start with a clear, high-contrast image, then use appropriate analysis methods for your sample type. These approaches and protocols are described at RhizoVision.com.

01 / Washed roots

Flatbed scanning

Spread washed roots in a clear tray and image them with a transparency-unit flatbed scanner. Even lighting, contrast, and minimal overlapping help generate images suitable for estimating root length, diameter, and related traits.
