About phenotyper

A name you can trust.
A brand that delivers.

From the makers of RhizoVision Explorer to your lab. Phenotyper brings scientific experience and practical engineering to accessible plant and microbial imaging equipment—ready for today's research and tomorrow's autonomous workflows.

Our approach

Built for scientists.
By scientists.

Phenotyper is a commercial brand of AgenticForge Labs. Our background includes developing RhizoVision Explorer and combines plant physiology, root phenotyping, imaging hardware, software development, and laboratory robotics.

We focus on useful, maintainable instruments: thoughtful sample handling, clear specifications, accessible image data, and software interfaces that connect with existing research tools, AI agents, and autonomous laboratory workflows.

Our founder

Science made accessible.
From Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Larry York founded the Phenotyper brand in 2026 to continue his work democratizing science: making plant and microbial phenotyping systems widely available, useful, and reliable while developing the science of agentic phenomics. Based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Phenotyper connects that mission with practical tools for the research community.

Larry brings more than 15 years of experience in image-based measurements, data analysis, and experimental design. He received the AoB PLANTS Open Science Award and released RhizoVision Explorer, which has been downloaded more than 20,000 times.

He chaired the Root Phenotyping Working Group of the International Plant Phenotyping Network for four years, served as Editor-in-Chief of Plant Direct, and has led numerous plant phenotyping workshops to support the community.

Why our work is grounded in science

Research first. Useful tools next.

The same attention to image quality, reproducibility, and experimental design that matters in published research should carry into the instruments labs use every day.

01 / Imaging

Measurement matters

Lighting, geometry, camera setup, and sample handling are part of an accurate imaging workflow—not afterthoughts.

02 / Openness

From RhizoVision Explorer

The experience behind RhizoVision Explorer and openly published root-scanning designs informs our approach to practical phenotyping instruments and reproducible imaging methods.

03 / Practicality

Clear scope

Products show available specifications and indicative pricing. Custom configurations, fabrication schedules, and validation needs are confirmed through direct quotations.

The mission behind the brand

Digital intelligence.
Physical agency.
Accessible to everyone.

AgenticForge Labs is dedicated to making persistent autonomous systems—combining digital AI and physical-world robotics—accessible to small businesses and laboratories everywhere.

We envision AI agents that can work across software, data, and instruments over time, rather than stopping at a chat interface. Phenotyper brings that direction to scientific imaging: useful hardware, accessible data, and interfaces ready to connect to your own automated and agent-driven workflows.

From roots to robotics

A growing range of tools.

Phenotyper offers a focused line of laboratory equipment, including acrylic root scanning trays on request and configurable robotic plate-imaging systems. The product line can expand as research needs and practical engineering opportunities emerge.

The science behind the name

Meet PheneMachine.

Why PheneMachine? A phene is an elemental unit of phenotype—one of the individual characteristics that together describe an organism. Functional phenomics connects these phenes to biological function and performance. The PheneMachine family helps researchers capture images and turn them into measurements for understanding biological traits. Read Larry York’s functional phenomics paper (2019) ↗
